Under reforms to the Freedom of Information Act 1982, the Information Publication Scheme requires the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade to publish information about its operation and powers as well as manuals and documents used in making decisions and recommendations affecting members of the public unless the document/information fits within a statutory exemption.

The Online Passport Information (OPI) is for public use and provides access to the Australian Passport Office policy information with information removed that fits within the exemption definitions.
